This boy is the bane of my existence. I hate looking at his stupid face. He deserved better. I don't like how a majority of his lore matches with mine IRL. Hanako-san of the Toilet, the Honorable No. 7 of the Seven Mysteries, a tragic 13-year old whose bright future got cut off way too early. Yugi Amane, the boy with big dreams of going to space, the boy who was inflicted with an illness, the person he used to be and probably never will be again.
DIVING INTO HEAVY SPOILER TERRITORY: The fact that even in the universe where he gets to live a somewhat normal life and grow up, he's still visibly miserable and it carries with him to the afterlife, it's so damn tragic. His brother that probably never came back (alive or dead) from the pit and the only way he can keep seeing him is through sending more victims his way. It's also pretty ironic that the happiest he probably has been in decades is through the company of Nene and Kou, the first two people who genuinely have seen him as a friend in so long.
Initially, I got hooked seeing him be so, I dunno, affectionate and protective towards Nene. He's a ghost who's done some of the most atrocious things and yet even though he believes himself to be incapable of it, he's experiencing what it's like to love, to feel again. The self-depacrating idiot just needs to get it into his thick skull that yes, his friends like him, and yes, they want him to stick around.
